2000. Based on Poynter Agate by David Berlow. Commissioned by the San Jose Mercury News classified section. Available to publication designers through the Font Bureau Studio Library.
Designed at Font Bureau.

The San Jose Mercury News comissioned these two fonts when they were retooling their classified section for a narrower page measure. Since classified ads are sold based on very specific line lengths, they needed a new, narrower typeface for double-height display lines that would let them keep their existing character count, but visually match Poynter Agate, which they were adopting for the rest of the text. These two weights are duplexed on the same character widths, and had to look good on newsprint from 10 to 70 point. I couldn't have done it without several rounds of press tests. I ended up applying many of the tricks I learned drawing this face to the narrowest styles of Amplitude.
